Best Waterproof Backpack: The Barrel and Harness

Our team have looked at many different waterproof bags.  Most of them suffer from the same problem, a zipper or Velcro closure that can let water in.  The gaps between the zipper teeth and the hooks and loops allows for water to leak through.

The solution if you need something that can withstand being flipped and dunked into the water when on a canoe or kayak adventure is the waterproof barrel and its accompanying harness. It’s our choice and the choice of professional explorers.  When famed Canadian explorer Adam Shoalts explored Canada’s arctic coastline he used a waterproof barrel to ensure his gear was protected from water during his extreme remote adventure.  He knew at some point during his journey that his canoe would tip over.  This meant something with a waterproof seal that holds the water back.  Adam is not alone.  Whitewater rafters have also made these barrels as their preferred choice.  It does look a little unconventional, but once you look at the soft-sided bag in this space you will see it is worth it for the extra protection.

Critter and Odour Protection
Unlike soft dry bags, waterproof barrels offer a level of scent-sealing that can help prevent animals from catching a whiff of your food. Whether you’re in bear country or just trying to avoid a raccoon raid, a barrel with a secure screw-on style lid that is difficult to open without two human size hands gives you extra peace of mind.  There is a spring-tension metal clamp ring around the top for additional security.

Is It Comfortable?
Because of the unusual shape of a round barrel the harnesses are overbuilt with generous padding and straps to ensure the barrel stays in place.  How generous?  We are talking 3/4 of an inch of padding on lumbar and 5/8 of an inch of padding on the back pad.

Which Barrel Should I get?

Barrels normally come in two different sizes: 30 and 60 liters. Each harness is made specifically for one of these two sizes.  Think of the items and quantities you want to put in your barrel.  Items such as food, matches, first aid kits, satellite phones, or insulin are examples of items that you won’t want to get soaked.

1. 30 litre barrels.
These are designed for shorter adventures.

2. 60 litre barrels
Longer adventures require more food and supplies.

Where to Buy?

Waterproof barrels and the needed accompanying harnesses are around at multiple retailers, but we found for the best deal skip the big-box store and go straight to a store that specializes in camping equipment.
